### Wood Moisture Content
Wood’s moisture content (MC) is a crucial factor influencing its properties and performance. MC represents the amount of water held in the wood compared to its oven-dry weight. This value significantly impacts wood’s dimensional stability, strength, and susceptibility to decay.
### Can Wood Contain Over 100% Moisture Content?
Surprisingly, yes. Wood can contain over 100% MC. This phenomenon occurs when the wood absorbs water equivalent to more than its own dry weight. This excess water is often trapped in wood fiber cells and voids.
When MC exceeds 100%, wood becomes highly susceptible to decay and structural damage. Excessively moist wood provides an ideal environment for microorganisms to thrive, leading to rot and deterioration.
